The Friday Five!
short and sweet because I am on vacation
This week we’ve been on our annual beach trip, and it’s been so great. I took this picture last night after staring at the horizon alone for about an hour. (Gotta get that time to contemplate the future while I’m here.) I’ve always to Emerald Isle when I need something and I can’t say exactly what. And I usually find it! Just like shells on the beach.
Also this week: shrimpburgers. No, they are not patties made of shrimp. They are: fried shrimp, cocktail sauce, slaw and tartar on a bun. Ideally served with onion rings. I’m a Big Oak Drive In fan—that’s what this one is—-but there are many great versions around here. I’m basically eating my way across the island.
Also, who else brings an entire pack of solo cups and some Sharpies to the beach for a big group? We’ve been here four days and I have at least one for each with my name on it floating around. Drink up!
The best thing about an annual trip is seeing how everyone changes. We’ve been doing this in one way or another for years now, but this group is our pandemic bubble, so we’re especially tight. At night I take my daughter and my BFF’s down to the beach to run around and, yes, contemplate the horizon. I know what’s on my mind. What’s ahead, bills, money, life. Maybe I have an inkling of what’s in theirs? Beginnings, like school, probably. And anywhere from there.
Of course I dragged my miniatures down here, because I am now That Person Who Crafts on Vacation. One of the first things I made was this little Buddha box to bless the trip. (I am not religious but I have a lot of faith!) Put my favorite Taylor Album in there, and my friend L. painted a seascape. Plus, a cupcake. Everyone loves those.
Finally, a thank you to everyone reading. I have a few Substack stats but no way to know really how many people really see this once I hit PUBLISH and it soars out into the ether. It’s been good for me, though, doing this. It’s given me the confidence to start thinking about events and getting back out there. I’m looking into conferences and bookstore dates, saying yes a bit more. It’s terrifying to feel like I’m back at one after 27 years in this business but also kind of thrilling. Who knows what will happen? Only the Buddha. Better go put down another cupcake.
Have a good weekend, everyone!
